The UpWell Score

One number for
body and mind.

Every daily metric you track rolls up into two halves, physical and mental, and one score you can move.

Physical 84Mental 79

Built from what you already measure.

Wearables, scales, cuffs and a 20-second check-in each day. Each metric is scored against your own baseline, then weighted into the two halves.

Our mission

We're rebuilding healthcare from the ground up.

Affordable, individualized, data-driven functional medicine. Preventive care first. Financial incentives for the lifestyle changes that matter. All of it driving at one outcome: a longer healthspan and a better quality of life.

Individualized

Your data, your plan.

Labs, wearables and daily inputs feed one model of you. Advice changes when your numbers change.

Functional & integrated

Root causes, not symptoms.

Functional medicine, nutrition, sleep, movement and mind, working from the same chart.

Preventive

Before, not after.

We start with the habits you live every day: cut the bad ones, install healthy systems, retest to prove it worked.

Incentivized

Paid to improve.

Hit milestones and complete protocols and you earn extra spend in a catalog of good-and-good-for-you products and services.

Vertically integrated

From the member upward.

We own the stack from app to clinic to market, so costs stay optimized and outcomes stay the point.

How it compounds

We build positive feedback loops into your life.

Most health advice is a to-do list. UpWell is a loop. You measure, so you know exactly what to work on. You act on a protocol built for your numbers. You earn credits for following through, which you spend on more of what works. And you feel the difference, in your sleep, your energy, your labs, which makes the next step easier than the last.

Every turn of the loop makes the next one more likely. Habits stop costing willpower and start paying dividends. That is how a better week becomes a better decade.

Evidence first

The goal: more, better years.

Every UpWell protocol traces back to published research, applied in this order: first stop what shortens life, then add what lengthens it, then make it stick.

01

Don't die young

Stop what shortens life.

The biggest, fastest gains in healthspan come from removing the habits with the strongest links to cardiovascular disease, cancer and early death.

Smoking · 216,917 adults

10+ yrs lost

Smokers lose more than a decade of life. Quitting gets most of it back.

Current smokers' life expectancy was shortened by more than 10 years versus never-smokers. Those who quit at 25–34 gained about 10 years; at 35–44, 9 years; at 45–54, 6 years.

Jha et al., NEJM, 2013

Alcohol · 599,912 drinkers, 83 studies

100 g / week

Past about seven drinks a week, every extra drink costs time.

Mortality risk rises above roughly 100 g of alcohol a week. At 40, drinking over 350 g a week (about 25 US drinks) was associated with a life expectancy 4–5 years shorter than staying under 100 g.

Wood et al., The Lancet, 2018

Inactivity · 15 studies, ~50,000 people

−40–53% risk of death

You don't need 10,000 steps. You need more than you take now.

Compared with the least active quarter, the three more active groups had a 40–53% lower risk of death. Benefit leveled off near 6,000–8,000 steps a day over 60, and 8,000–10,000 under 60.

Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health, 2022

02

Live longer, live better

Add what lengthens life.

Fitness, strength, diet and relationships each carry their own measurable effect on how long and how well you live.

Cardio fitness · 122,007 patients

No ceiling

Fitter people live longer, and the benefit never tops out.

Higher cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with lower long-term mortality with no upper limit of benefit observed, even at elite levels.

Mandsager et al., JAMA Network Open, 2018

Strength · 16 studies

−10–17% all-cause mortality

Half an hour of strength work a week moves the needle.

30–60 minutes of muscle-strengthening activity a week was linked to a 10–17% lower risk of death from any cause, and lower cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes mortality.

Momma et al., Br J Sports Med, 2022

Five habits · 123,219 people, 34 yrs

+14 yrs women · +12.2 men

Five habits at 50 are worth more than a decade.

Never smoking, 30 minutes of daily activity, a healthy weight, a healthy diet and moderate drinking: adults with all five at age 50 lived 14 years longer (women) and 12.2 years longer (men) than those with none.

Li et al., Circulation, 2018

Social connection · 148 studies, 308,849 people

+50% likelihood of survival

Strong relationships are a survival factor on par with quitting smoking.

People with stronger social relationships had a 50% greater likelihood of survival, an effect comparable with established risk factors like smoking and larger than physical inactivity or obesity.

Holt-Lunstad et al., PLoS Medicine, 2010

03

Make it stick

Put something on the line.

Knowing what to do is not the hard part. Behavioral economics shows that stakes and rewards are what turn intent into habit.

Smoking · randomized, 2,538 people

52% vs 17%

Putting something on the line tripled success rates.

Among people willing to accept either, a $150 deposit produced 52.3% sustained abstinence at six months versus 17.1% for a pure $800 reward, and about five times usual care (6%).

Halpern et al., NEJM, 2015

Smoking · Cochrane, 48 trials, 21,924 people

+52% quit rate

Incentives work, and keep working after they stop.

People offered incentives were 1.52× as likely to be abstinent at six months or longer (95% CI 1.33–1.74, high certainty), including in trials where follow-up came after payments ended.

Notley et al., Cochrane, 2025

Weight loss · randomized, 16 weeks

14.0 lb vs 3.9 lb

A deposit contract more than tripled weight loss.

Participants who staked their own money lost 14.0 lb on average versus 3.9 lb for monthly weigh-ins alone; 47% hit the 16-lb goal versus 10.5%.

Volpp et al., JAMA, 2008

Exercise · randomized, 13 weeks

45% vs ~33% of days

Something to lose beats something to gain.

Employees who could lose $1.40 a day for missing 7,000 steps hit the goal 45% of days. An equal gain-framed reward and a lottery did no better than no incentive.

Patel et al., Annals of Internal Medicine, 2016

UpWell for Business

Healthier team.
Stronger company.

A performance health platform that lowers absenteeism and disability cost while raising energy, focus and work-life satisfaction. Measured, not promised.

The cost of doing nothing

Poor health is your biggest unmanaged expense.

It shows up as sick days, disability claims, turnover and people who are present but running on empty. The research puts numbers on it:

Productivity loss · per employee

$4,798 per employee / yr

The average annual productivity loss per employee with a chronic condition.

Employees with three or more conditions miss 7.8 days a year versus 2.2 for those with none. Prevalence is up 7% since 2021.

Integrated Benefits Institute, Chronic Conditions in the US Workforce

Short-term disability · US employers

+50% STD days lost since 2015

Disability leave is the fastest-growing absence cost.

Workdays lost to short-term disability rose 50% between 2015 and 2019, climbing about 11% a year, with 5.6 STD claims per 100 employees on average. Most start as untreated chronic conditions.

Integrated Benefits Institute, 2019 benchmarks; CDIA

Wellbeing · 10,937 US employees

−53% sick days

Thriving employees miss half as many days.

Employees thriving in their overall lives miss 53% fewer days of work for health problems, are 46% less likely to be burned out and 65% less likely to be job hunting.

Gallup, 2026

Turnover · 10,937 US employees

22% vs 12%

Struggling employees leave at nearly twice the rate.

Per 1,000 front-line hires, the wellbeing gap in turnover represents about 200 employees a year, or conservatively $3.3 million.

Gallup, 2021

Where the savings come from

Chronic disease is the bill. Lifestyle is the lever.

Nearly four in five employees already have a chronic condition, and each one costs about $4,800 a year in lost productivity. Those conditions build slowly and respond to the same things: movement, food, sleep, weight and stress. UpWell works on those every day, before they become claims.

Prevalence · 47,450 US employees

78.4% have a chronic condition

Nearly four in five employees are managing at least one.

Up 7% since 2021. Across all US adults, chronic and mental health conditions take 90% of the $4.1 trillion spent on health care each year.

Integrated Benefits Institute, Chronic Conditions in the US Workforce; CDC via JEC

Unmet needs · 47,450 US employees

59.7% skip medication for cost

Most employees with a chronic condition aren't getting the care they need.

Nearly six in ten report skipping medications because of cost, up 8% since 2021, and working 48+ hours a week raises unmet health care needs by 23%. Untreated conditions are the ones that become claims.

Integrated Benefits Institute, Chronic Conditions in the US Workforce

Mental health · BRFSS, 2019

29% vs 18% depression

Chronic disease and depression travel together.

Adults with diabetes report depression at 29.2% versus 17.9% without, a gap that has held above 10 points for a decade. People with diabetes are 2–3× as likely to develop depression, and only 25–50% of them are diagnosed and treated.

Koyama et al., CDC Preventing Chronic Disease, 2023; Johns Hopkins

Prevention · randomized, 3,234 people

−58% diabetes incidence

Lifestyle beat medication at preventing diabetes.

A 7% weight-loss target and 150 minutes of activity a week cut new type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% over age 60), versus 31% for metformin. The effect was still 43% a decade later.

How it works for employers

Fund the credits.
We do the rest.

UpWell replaces the unused gym stipend and the wellness portal nobody opens with a system people actually use, because it pays them to.

01 · FUND

A monthly credit stipend

You fund credits for each employee. They spend them in the UpWell market on labs, care, nutrition, fitness and recovery, at the price we pay. Unused credits roll over.

02 · ACTIVATE

Protocols and team challenges

Everyone gets a baseline, a score and a protocol built for their numbers. Teams stake credits on shared challenges and earn up to 20% back for following through.

03 · SUPPORT

Care before it becomes a claim

On-demand telehealth, physio and mental health, with the price shown first. Early intervention is what keeps a sore back from becoming a disability claim.

04 · MEASURE

Outcomes you can report

Participation, UpWell Score, sick-day and claims trends and work-life satisfaction, aggregated and anonymized. Individual health data is never shared with the employer.

Estimate your return

What a healthier team is worth to you.

Per year, estimatedTodayWith UpWell
Illness-related absence days5,1504,120
Cost of lost days$1.68M$1.35M
Turnover cost avoided—$412K
UpWell credit stipend—$300K
Estimated net savings$0

Estimates only, for illustration. Assumes 10.3 illness-related lost days per employee per year (IBI, 2019) and a 20% reduction in year one, costed at daily fully loaded cost; turnover avoided at one quarter of Gallup's $3,300-per-employee wellbeing gap; stipend as set above. Excludes disability claims, presenteeism and avoided medical claims. IBI puts productivity loss at $4,798 per employee with a chronic condition, so the real number is likely higher. Results will vary; a pilot measures yours.
